Faith & foundations

Solus Christus.

Christ alone.

A confession at the heart of the Protestant Reformation: Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between God and humanity. His life, death, and resurrection are sufficient for salvation.

Before the Reformation

Late-medieval Europe had already heard calls for church reform, including those of John Wycliffe and Jan Hus. Printing helped circulate Scripture and criticism of church practices more widely.

Wittenberg, 1517

Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses challenged the practice of indulgences. The debate grew into a wider movement over salvation, the authority of Scripture, and the reform of the church.

Five convictions

The five solas summarize Protestant convictions associated with the Reformation. They were not a single five-point manifesto issued in 1517; the familiar grouping took shape later.

Five pillars. One foundation.

Five Latin phrases, each emphasizing “alone.” Select a pillar to explore its meaning.

Sola Scriptura · Sola fide · Solus Christus · Sola gratia · Soli Deo gloria

Drag left or right. Rotation stays on the vertical axis; the round pillars have no front or back.

Solus Christus

Christ alone

Christ alone mediates reconciliation with God. Salvation rests on His finished work, rather than another mediator or human merit.
